They even make it easy by often placing their traps in a straight line! This makes trolling adjacent to the trap line very easy and typically very productive this time of year. Between the chum in the trap, the bait hiding around the line, and the sea life hiding under the buoy the mackerel and sometimes even the kingfish will be often found around these crab traps.Īlso, crabbers will only put their crab lines along the harder bottom where the stone crabs are crawling. This line often will hold white bait from green backs to threadfins to sardines and more. Plus, they have a line running from the trap up to a buoy to mark the trap’s location. These guys are essentially a chum block marking a hard bottom area. Plus, this time of year the stone crab traps have been placed along our coast line. Brian Harris, our live bait expert at Hubbard’s Marina, has been catching plenty of mackerel around the beaches and out to around 3 miles lately fishing hard bottom areas that are holding bait. This past Tuesday afternoon our afternoon half day pulled in around a 12-15lb kingfish as we approached the Johns Pass sea buoy which is only a mile from the bridge.

The mackerel are still very prolific around our near shore waters, plus now the kingfish are being more and more cooperative around the near shore artificial reefs and bait schools moving along our beautiful beaches. This particular species of wrasse, Lachnolaimus maximus, is the only known member of it’s genus.They can grow up to 30 inches in length, weigh up to around 20 pounds, and live as long as 10 years.A large male hogfish can attract and mate with multiple females, forming little fish ‘harems’ along tropical reefs in 10-100 feet of water.
Born female, hogfish will mature to become male at around the 3-year mark. The hogfish is a sequential hermaphrodite, which means it will actually change it’s sex throughout it’s lifetime.Though widely known as hog snapper, they are actually not a snapper at all but a member of the wrasse family and more closely related to the parrot fish.Without a doubt this is why they are so overfished and heavily protected in most waters. Hogfish are regarded as one of the best tasting fish on Earth.There was a monster hogfish that was speared in the Gulf 100 miles off the Florida coast that weighed 21 pounds, 11 ounces (after being gutted). The IGFA world record hogfish weighed 21 pounds, 15 ounces and was caught off of Charleston, South Carolina.The seasons in the Gulf is also year-round, versus the May-November seasons for the Atlantic. In Gulf waters, however, the daily bag limit is raised to five. In Atlantic federal waters including the Florida Keys only 1 fish is allowed per person. Regarding marine conservation, these are very protected fish. They can be found around tropical reefs, using their elongated pig-like snout to root around the sea floor, hence the name.
They feed on mollusks, urchins, crabs and other crustaceans. Though hogfish are sometimes called hog snapper, they are not a member of the snapper family. Spear fishing is an extremely popular way of catching this species, as they aren’t easily caught with rod and reel. They are also known to be a favorite of anglers here in Florida and wherever they are caught. Hogfish are well known for their food quality, they are absolutely delicious.
